You know that thrill you get when you win? When you cross the finish line and you know you’re the first one there? At Airtel Payments Bank, we are addicted to that feeling!
When we started, the dream of a Payments Bank was nothing more than an eager whisper in the ears of our founders. Our launch in January 2017 made us India’s 1st Payments Bank and we had to learn to navigate without a map. After all, if you are trying to do something nobody has ever done before, whose example do you follow?
So, what does it feel like to be a part of the movement? It is EXHILARATING!
I remember how different it was back in 2015 when our product was more thought than technology, more rhetoric than reality, more dream than delivery. There was anticipation in the air, coursing through each vacant workstation and crowded conference room! The early days are all about thinking big- and nobody does that better than us! In no time, the floor was filled with people ready to have sleepless nights, attend wee-hour meetings and go home only to bathe!
And the last year and a half have been complete madness!
At first it seemed impossible, to be honest, but you know what kept us going? One simple thought- can you really change the world if you aren’t crazy enough to think you can?
We knew it wasn’t going to be easy to change the way banking is done in India, but we began our journey anyway!
There is SO MUCH left to achieve, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be where we are. Today, the team is more excited, dedicated and innovative than we’ve ever been- 310 times more, to be precise! Every one of us is filled with a feeling of pride and pleasure as we are not just a bank but a full-fledged financial institution, serving 30 million people- that’s almost as much as the population of Australia and London combined!
Months and years of preparation helped us create a product that promised to make banking new-age, intuitive and convenient and built as a solution to traditional banking problems:
• To tackle the issue of low returns, we offered an interest rate of 7.25%, an industry benchmark, that helped every Indian save while they spend
• To simplify the process of opening a bank account and eliminate paperwork hassles, we shortened the process to under 3 minutes with only an Aadhaar card required
• To provide neighbourhood banking in its truest sense, we leveraged our 1.5 million strong network of retailers and trained them to become helpful, knowledgeable bankers. Today, there are nearly 400000 banking points of Airtel Payments Bank, which is more than all Indian ATM’s put together!
• Additionally, we entered into a strategic alliance with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) so thousands of HPCL fuel stations across the country act as our banking points
• We partnered with the government to bring Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) on Airtel Payments Bank, enabling easy withdrawal of government subsidies
• Our association with Mastercard allowed us to offer a free online debit card so every customer was empowered to experience banking in its simplest, fastest form
• And just a few months ago, we integrated UPI onto our digital platform- the MyAirtel app- enabling our 30 million consumers to pay/transfer instantly and securely and do away with delays and shortcomings of IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, and other payment modes
While our plans are ever-evolving and we are more ambitious every day, one thing is for sure: serving millions customers is what tops our to-do list as of now, and we at Airtel Payments Bank are living and breathing this goal! Here’s to the best deserved 1st Anniversary ever!
